Brook then ship drifting towards the Thriller Bark, five years before the start of the series. Intends to improve steering his ship, he fell and explore the island. Above the island, he discovers a variety of strange creatures who became residents there. Brook was arrested and taken to Gekko Moriah. After seeing his ability turn zombies, shadow successfully stolen Moriah and he returned to his boat while being unconscious. After floating above the ship, Brook managed to find his way back to Thriller Bark. There he secretly investigate and managed to find the weakness zombie sea salt. He then interrogated Hogback to find zombies that have shadow. He finally met Ryuma, zombies who have the imagination and try to defeat him, but failed. After begging to be released, Brook secretly escape from Thriller Bark. Over the next five years, he continued to train himself to be able to beat Ryuma when reunited.

One day, the ship belonging to the Straw Hat Pirates Thousand Sunny accidentally bumped into Brook ship while sailing across oceans Florian Triangle. Interested in seeing the apparition Brook, Luffy decided to go up to his ship followed Nami and Sanji were chosen because of the lottery. Brook and welcome them as he introduced himself. Luffy invited him to join, and immediately received with surprising joy Nami and Sanji. They went down together into the Thousand Sunny. Brook attended the dinner with the straw hat crew. After the meal, she began to explain her past, including revealing about the loss of shadow. Brook said that the shadow has been stolen, but refused to tell the culprit for the safety of the straw hat crew. As a result he could not go out in the daytime because sunlight can destroy his body. He was actually very happy to meet with them, including Luffy's offer, but was forced to refuse for fear of burdening them. But Luffy promised to help him get back shadow. Pleased with their kindness, Brook intends to demonstrate his skills in music for the sake of entertaining them. Have not had time to make the point, suddenly appeared a kind of ghost from behind the wall. He rushed out and followed all the straw hat crew. He found that the Thousand Sunny was drifting towards the Thriller Bark. After saying goodbye, Brook jumped ship and ran across the water to the island.

Arriving on the island, Brook started looking Ryuma; including managed to neutralize some of the zombies in his quest. After the meeting, they fight again, but he was beaten and thrown out of a high tower. Incidentally Franky and Robin were there, trapped by nets Tararan. After waking up, he beat Tararan with a sword attack and neutralize it. To them both, Brook explains the weakness of zombies. He also tells them about the whale and his desire to be able to see him again. He then rushed away to seek Ryuma again. Brook found Ryuma was sitting drinking tea in the laboratory Hogback. He challenged him once again, and they involved a fierce battle. But losing class Brook and can be defeated Ryuma. When helpless, Ryuma decided to cut afro hair that thrashed Brook pleaded released. When they want to cut, suddenly the entire island sway, making Ryuma lost his balance and failed to cut afro Brook. Suddenly Franky and Zoro who came to help Brook. Zoro managed to block sword attacks Ryuma for Brook. Zoro and Franky told to bring Brook and he himself will fight Ryuma; including getting his shadow back. Franky Brook along defeat Zoro watched as zombies and get his shadow back.
Against Giant Zombie Oars and Gekko Moriah

When they were celebrating the return of the shadow Brook, Luffy zombie, Oars rampaging giant and challenging straw hat crew. When the straw hat crew fight against Oars, Brook quietly went to the kitchen for milk for health and accumulate large amounts of salt in preparation against a giant zombie. He returned in time to save Usopp from Oars attacks are now assisted Moriah, while carrying a sack of salt. He decided to join the straw hat crew help against Oars and Moriah. Brook then devise a plan aided Usopp, Nami and Nico Robin. He slid use "Usopp Kuwagata", then rotated by force and given effect lightning Robin Nami, and by brandishing his sword, he slid penetrate Oars. Unfortunately he then crashed into the wall of the building and trapped there. Oars tried to step on it, but his attention diverted Usopp and he fell down to the ground. When Oars back to step on, Robin immediately pulled the strength Hana Hana no Mi After Luffy appears to force a hundred shadow, Brook straw hat with the rest of the crew were moved to a safe place by Lola and other victims of Moriah. When Oars can get up after receiving a heavy blow Luffy, Brook joined the crew plan the next straw hat. While others do his job, he took Luffy and bring it up to the main mast of Thriller Bark with the help of Nico Robin, Luffy then threw toward Oars are using the technique of "Gear Third" to beat Oars. However Moriah has not given up trying last-ditch effort by "Shadow Asgard". Brook can only watch when Luffy and Moriah fight each other, which can be won Luffy and liberate all the shadows on time along with the appearance of the sun. When everyone is excited to celebrate the end of a nightmare, Brook are among those who see the emergence of another Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma. They agreed to refuse when Kuma offered their freedom by giving and receiving attacks Luffy "Ursus Shock" as a consequence. Although the attack was powerful enough to destroy the whole island, but Brook still can wake up to see Zoro and Sanji attempt to save Luffy from Bartholomew Kuma.

Join the Straw Hat Crew
After the incident, Brook with people who are victims celebrate their success with the sun enjoying the sunshine all day long. Once satisfied sunbathing, he joined the others partying at Mansion ruins Mast. Brook decided to play the piano, and to Sanji, he claimed helped them face Kuma saw action. When playing the song "Bink Sake", Luffy once again asked him to join because the shadow has been returned. Brook tells Luffy that he still can not join because it still has a promise with Laboon nakama. But Luffy forced her back because it knows its promise of Franky, that he had met with Laboon who keeps waiting for fifty years and participated in the confirmation Sanji and Usopp. Hearing this, Brook finally willing to join and started formally introducing himself before the straw hat crew
